One late night on a 2018 New Zealand visit, we went on a tour to Mount John observatory. An area of 1,700 square miles around the observatory was declared as the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association, one of only four such reserves around the world.
We were thrilled by the chance of looking deep into the cosmos with powerful telescopes. We were shown constellations of the Southern sky, especially Southern Cross and Magellan clouds.
My quilt Southern Sky was inspired by what I saw that night. Four brightest stars on my quilt form Southern Cross as I see it in my imagination.
Materials My own hand dyed cotton fabrics, polyester batting, quilted with polyester thread. Sleeve in back.
