The cross has been designed and crafted by the Genoese sculptor Antonio Vedele (May 13, 1930 - Oct. 4, 1997).
The cross represents "the good Shepherd" who guides his flock to the fold and carries the lost sheep on his shoulders. The cross's simple, linear style is also intended as a symbol of a new ecclesiastical era, a poor Church among the poor, as Pope Francis has indicated.
