New Mexico has significant limestone deposits, most notably the Capitan Reef
near Carlsbad, which is an ancient fossilized reef system, and the Kelly Limestone
near Magdalena, a formation known for its ore deposits. These formations are rich
in fossils and have been important to both scientific study and the state's history of
mineral extraction. You can also find massive limestone deposits, such as the Madera Group,
across southern and eastern New Mexico.
