Huge Balinese Temple Medallion Wood Carved Traditional Barong 48" Tall Demon. Estate sale purchase from a 75 year old collection of a world traveler. This Balinese wooden wall relief sculpture is very well done with a the cultural hero Barong dancing victorious over a demon head. This sculpture is an impressive at 48" tall and 19" wide. It does show some signs of age with chipped paint here and there, but if anything it adds to the charm and intrigue. Please note one of the pinkies has broken. Impressively carved from a single piece of wood the god/demon is adorned in a gold colored garment and crown. In particular the hand position makes me think this Barong as there are other historical images with this same posture; to say nothing of his position over the demon like creature at the base. Such a medallion in the home is intended for good fortune and purification. Or maybe I got it all wrong and this is actually Rangda the demon witch!
