Antique 19th Century Ambrotype/Tintype Portrait in Unusual Frame ~ 7”

Antique 19th century portrait of an older woman in traditional dress, housed in an ornate oval frame. Based on expert feedback, this is likely an ambrotype or tintype (not a daguerreotype). When tilted, the image has a reflective quality, and there is wear at the edges where the mat meets the plate.

The frame itself is quite unusual, possibly hand-crafted from a natural or composite material. I am not 100% sure of the material—feels organic and textured, almost like bark or pinecone work, but aged over time. The back is paper-covered with old string remnants.

Some collectors have suggested this may be a postmortem photo, but I cannot confirm that.

-Condition: Wear consistent with age, some chipping and cracks to the frame, light surface marks to the image, but overall a striking and rare survivor.
